Fifth Chapel of the Pantheon Basilica in Rome “Madonna della Clemenza”
The fifth chapel of the Pantheon offers a 15th-century painting representing the Virgin Mary on the throne with the Child Jesus, between Saint John the Baptist and Saint Francis. This painting is called “Madonna della Clemenza” or “Madonna Cancellata.”
The name “Madonna Cancellata” comes from the fact that at one time, before the painting was hung in the Fifth Chapel, it was located in a niche in the Pronaos, protected by a grid, a “cancello”.
It was not until 1837 that this painting was installed in the fifth chapel of the Pantheon.
